Summary
From the threat of invasion by Napoleon’s army vast Army of England, to dark days of the Great War, the coast of south Kent between Folkestone and the Romney Marsh has stood in the nations front line. Today’s peaceful and picturesque panorama conceals a turbulent century which has left its mark on the landscape and the character of the area.

The army camp at Shorncliffe and the Ranges at Hythe and Lydd are still operational; the Martello Towers, the Royal Military Canal and the School of Musketry are remainders of this fascinating period of history.

This book is about more than just bricks and mortar. The stories of the soldiers and civilians, often in their own words, take us back in time as we explore their triumphs and tragedies through 125 years of war and peace.

The authors are a father and son team. Michael George is a solicitor and he lives and works in Kent. He has already given a number of talks on the events covered in the book.

Son and co-author Martin is studying for an LLM at the University of Nottingham. He is a keen table tennis player, having represented his county at the sport. Martin has created the web site, www.coastofconflict.com as a companion to the book.
